iPhone 3G v2.0 Missing Features

Now I'm a big usability head and think the iPhone really is the bees knees, but I've worked in mobiles for a while now and been a gadget freak too. So there are a few basic features missing from the iPhone, and some not so basic ones.

So here, due to popular demand, and in no particular order, is a list of iPhone Missing Features!

* no MMS
* no bluetooth transfer of contacts/items to other devices
* no sms drafts
* no sms forwarding
* no video recording
* no video streaming (youtube is not streamed, it's "progressive download")
* no deleting of photos, songs sync'd from iTunes
* and of course - no cut & paste!

All the above can be fixed in a future software releases.

Addressing the following missing features require a hardware upgrade:
* higher megapixel camera
* auto-focus camera lens
* light or flash
* no video calling (front camera required, video iChat anyone?)

I'm sure there are more to add. Let me know what you think.

    * no image editing functions! no rotate, no zoom/scale/crop, no framing, no exposure adjustment, basic filters (sepia, b/w, etc.)

    * no landscape keyboard in ANY app except Safari

    * no ability to flag an email for follow-up

    * also, no unified inbox

    (ok, so the email app needs some serious work)

    * MobileMe does not work through a proxy! (ok, this is not specific to the iPhone, but related to it).

  • From Craig (edited):

    * no voice commands - as many have noted, given the iPhone's lack of real keys would assist navigation by touch, voice commands would be VERY handy on a device you can't really use without *looking* at

    * no voice-dialing! (there is an app that does this but it requires network access and it should be a system wide feature anyway)

  • More thoughts:

    * no volume control on the headphones (I'm sick of pulling my iPhone out of my pocket to adjust the volume all the time!)

    * sms app is VERY slow once you have over 500 sms's in there!

  • The discussion of everything iPhone is taking over my life - the technology, the good, the bad, everything. Apple, stop it!

  • Being able to delete photos or songs imported from iTunes is not something you've ever been able to do with an iPod, so I see no reason why it would be on the iPhone. The iPod/iPhone is the display device, not the editor.

    At first I wasn't mad keen on the synchronising needs, but once you see how it works it becomes painless.

    MMS is 50% OK because you can send an email, but it's definitely not perfect.

    All the others I agree are missing and I'm sure will be available via software update in the next 12 months or so.

    Regarding the camera, there was a good article on Ars Technica recently about how a higher megapixel camera isn't the answer in itself. I believe the chip system the iPhone uses can actually support a camera up to 5MP, but the lens and/or aperture means it would probably make pictures look worse (read the article for exactly why).

    To make the camera better it needs a whole new setup in that respect (new lens, flash etc.) which would mean a significant redesign of the phone - something I personally don't think we'll see until at least MacWorld, January 2010.

    Despite all the missing features, as you say above, it's still the bees knees. All the other phone manufacturers seem to think that chucking any and every feature they can into a handset is a good idea, yet most of the time they completely fail to ensure these features work well or are complete.

    For example, Samsung phones are truly terrible to use. I'm amazed people ever buy them. Hideous contraptions that simply make no sense to the user. And they always break.

    Another example, the first decent music phone I had was a Sony W800i. It was OK, but to get music onto it was a nightmare - and this was the first "Walkman" branded phone!

    No handset is perfect, but I'll happily take a few minor missing features, and a lousy camera, for a phone that is quite simply leagues ahead of any previous handset I've ever used.

  • - No A2DP Stereo Bluetooth support ... almost makes me want to go back to my SE Walkman phone just to avoid getting those wires tangled, caught all the time... sigh... aren't we due for a revised iPhone around about now?
